WIP Update | Playroom started - first model
So I've started on my playroom project and it have daunted on me that this is going to be a large (but fun) project. Still haven't planed all the models that I want to put in the room, but it looks like every model will be a small (or big) project by itself, and there will be a lot of models.
One thing I knew I wanted in the room from the start was LEGO, so that was I started with. At first I wasn't really sure on how I wanted the model to look (other than a house), but then I found that LEGO has posted a lot of their building instructions on their website. So I went through their database (which is very tedious, not user-friendly at all) and found some interesting models. The one I decided to start with is a cute little house (the creativity and skills of the LEGO designers is amazing) and a great model.
I could've just modeled it"traditionally" and then just textured it to get the brick-feel, but I decided to approach it like I've would if I built it with real bricks. I started with creating some of the bricks I needed and then placing them as "dupligoups", which I soon discovered was a mistake (mainly because I couldn't assign the different brigs different materials). So I had to change my approach I little, but that's what this project is about: doing, making mistakes and learning.
So I followed the instructions and placed every brick by hand, which was a bit tedious but gave it a little more organic feel (as every Lego-brick isn't perfect irl). It took a while, but at the end I'd placed 373 bricks and created a "virtual Lego-model".
So here you can see the finished model (rendered in Octane):
